My work focuses on accessibility of built spaces and facilitating connections between people to experience their community and not feel othered. When I plan a tour with my group, I want variety that’s outside of visual art alone. I’m looking for makerspaces and things we can touch and interact with. Transportation is always something I’m thinking about as well. We need safe, accessible drop off spots where people also feel comfortable traveling on their own. It helps to go somewhere we can see a lot at once, like Canopy. I also focus on people and places that are welcoming. When we talk about accessibility in the arts, what is helpful is more interaction. There is a natural curiosity about the stories behind why and how things are made. It is the most fun when the artist is present—it adds context beyond just seeing it.
Broad Studios Club House is an educational ceramic studio in the heart of East Austin. We offer classes, date nights, memberships, workshops, private events and more.
The Mosaic Workshop is a creative hub that teaches the art of mosaic making through hands-on classes, collaborative team building activities, and monumental public art installations. We empower communities to explore their artistic expression, connect with one another, and contribute to Austin’s vibrant cultural landscape through the beautiful art form of mosaics.
The award-winning Austin Public Library (APL) has been the community’s premier source of knowledge, technology, and inspiration for nearly a century. It provides library programs, technology, collections, and space through its state-of-the-art Central Library, Austin History Center, and 20 library branches. It also provides services and resources out in the community through outreach and partnerships.
Travis Association for the Blind, a.k.a. Austin Lighthouse, is a service-oriented 501(c)(3) offering education, training, advocacy and community for blind and visually-impaired individuals. It is our mission to assist people in building or restoring their independence through skills training, education and employment opportunities, encouraging them to be gainfully employed and become involved in their local community.
Many of those touched by Parkinson’s have noted a link between Parkinson’s and an “artistic spark” that drives people with Parkinson’s to create. Where this spark stems from remains unclear, but a growing body of research suggests that dopamine replacement therapy may increase the drive to create in people with Parkinson’s. The Power for Parkinson’s Creative Showcase will present a dynamic exhibition of art created by people with Parkinson’s.
spilled milk social club is a local youth organization that seeks to facilitate creative play as a path to healthy development. For 13+ years, we have been in the business of creating fun with school-aged youngsters. Whether it be songwriting and recording, original theater productions, kid-led markets and arcades or just messy, silly fun—we’re here for making big, zany dreams come true!
We are a 501c3 nonprofit that promotes inclusion of people with and without disabilities through the arts and recreation. Founded by Master’s-level Recreational Therapist & multidisciplinary artist Rachel Cohen, it serves as both an art project and a social prescription to foster empathy and self-acceptance. Through collaborative arts programming, classes, and inclusive events, we foster creative community expression for the collaboration of a more inclusive world. We promote accessibility by raising awareness of our collective proximity to disability through panels, outreach & expression.
We are a nonprofit art space in East Austin that provides artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities the materials, space, and support to produce, exhibit and sell their artwork. Our mission is to nurture and amplify the voices of artists with disabilities, so that they may meaningfully engage with the social, economic and creative life of the community.
Psychojelly is a collaborative team of artists and technologists creating interactive installations. We combine projection mapping, real-time video, spatial audio, and interactive sensors with custom software to transform rooms into immersive, interactive and experiential art. Our work explores presence and play—how people shape the artwork and how the artwork shapes community.
