In early adulthood, I experienced an episode of acute manic psychosis, which not only resulted in a Bipolar I diagnosis but turned my world inside out. This event led me to examine perceptions of reality, the balance between freedom and control and the concept of animality. My recent work invites the viewer to project their own understanding of these themes onto prismatic depictions of toy horses and figurines that I’ve collected since childhood—staged, embellished and dramatically lit—as uncanny, still life tableaus.
